One of the most awarded singers in Bollywood, Shreya Ghoshal is a singer par excellence who has touched the hearts of countless people with her beautiful voice and unparalleled versatility. Over the span of more than two decades, Shreya's captivating voice has graced countless songs, and her journey in the music industry has been nothing short of remarkable.
From a young age, it was evident that Shreya possessed a natural gift for singing. Her parents recognized her prodigious talent and encouraged her to pursue music. She received formal training in classical music under the guidance of acclaimed vocalist Late Kalyanji Bhai and music director Late Mukta Bhide. This rigorous training not only honed her vocal prowess but also instilled a deep understanding of musical nuances.
Shreya’s luck shone when filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's mother saw her win the television singing reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’, following which she made her Bollywood playback singing debut with Bhansali's romantic drama ‘Devdas’ (2002).
Shreya's voice resonated deeply with audiences across the nation, and her career skyrocketed from there. She quickly became the voice behind numerous chart-topping hits. Her ability to seamlessly transition between genres, from soulful ballads to energetic dance numbers, showcased her versatility and artistic range.
Shreya's exceptional contributions to the world of music have been acknowledged through numerous awards and accolades. She has received four National Film Awards, four Kerala State Film Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, seven Filmfare Awards and ten Filmfare Awards South.
Ghoshal, in addition to playback singing, has appeared as a judge on several television reality shows and in music videos. In 2013, she performed at the Brisbane Convention Center, the Dallas Brooks Center in Melbourne, the Sydney Opera House, and the Vodafone Events Center in Auckland. She also performed at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in the United Arab Emirates that year.
She went on London tours, twice performing at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013 and 2014. She also celebrated 100 years of Bollywood on her first tour in 2013 by performing many of the old Bollywood hits songs.
Ghoshal performed the theme song of the ‘2010 Commonwealth Games’ at its closing ceremony in 2006, alongside Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Shiamak Davar, as an invitation to everyone to the following Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Members of the United Kingdom's House of Commons awarded her the highest honour in London in April 2013. Forbes India named her one of the ‘Top 5 Singers and Musicians’ in 2013. She is the only Indian singer on the Verve's list of the ‘50 Power Women of 2016’.
In 2013, the UK-based newspaper Eastern Eye ranked her forty-third on their list of ‘50 Sexiest Asian Women’. In 2015, she was ranked seventh on their list of the ‘Greatest 20 Bollywood Playback Singers’.
MensXP.com, an Indian lifestyle website for men, ranked her third among the ‘Top Ten Hottest Female Bollywood Lead Singers’. She became the first Indian singer to have a wax figure of herself made for display in the Indian wing of the Madame Tussauds Museum in Delhi in March 2017.
